Background to the template

This version of the Canvas course template is based on a template developed by the occupational therapist program. The template was developed in close collaboration with students and teachers in the section for occupational therapy. The course template is also based on principles from universal design for learning UDL. The educational technologists at UoL KI have further developed the template to make it universal. We have also added our own symbol icons to the pages which have been designed and created for KI. The starting point for these templates is web accessibility in order to ensure that KI courses are more inclusive. Please feel free to contact us if you want to make suggestions or give feedback on any aspect of this template.

Purpose and use

Not only is the template a basis for you to create your course content but it is also aimed at ensuring that students are presented with consistent and uniform course design for everyone studying at KI. Accessibility is all about making it clear to students where they can find the relevant content for their studies. Using a consistent course design will help students locate content and will prevent the stress of being unsure what to do next in the course.

Please note, that is is a template, and as such, just a suggestion for how you can build your course room in Canvas. It may not suit your course. You are free to make your own adjustments and changes and add it to Commons for your programme. If you create your own version you must clearly label it as a template and for which programme it is to be used.

The template provides:

A start page
A module with general information on the course.
Numbered modules which you can use to structure course content in weeks or subject specific content. Each module contains a module overview, as well as pages for you to publish learning resources and lectures.
A course menu that has been set to mirror the recommendations from KI on which menu headings to show your students.

Extra material

In one of the modules we give a couple of suggestions for page layout for a couple of different assignment types.
You will also see that you have been given a library of images/icons that you can use on your pages to help you students quickly recognize the type of content on the page eg. Information, assignment etc. These images can be find in the folder "Icon pictures.."

If you want to preview the template before downloading then click on the Preview button below.

NB!! If you import the template into a course that your have already started to edit it will override your existing course settings. We recommend that you start with an empty course room before you import the template.

Instructions for importing the template

Preview the template before you import it
Create a new course room via Dashboard > Create new course
Click on the import from Commons to the right:
Now you will see a search box for Commons. Write Course Template in the box to search for the template:
Click on the template and then Import/Download in the menu to the right.
Select your newly created course room in the list of your courses. Select Import to course.
Wait a few minutes and then go to the new course room to see if it has updated.
When the import is complete you can access the content that you have imported. Don't forget that you will need to make sure that the course's name and settings are correct for your course.
