Please note: It is important to make sure that you check your notification settings as one of the first things you do when you get an account in Canvas. You can also make sure you revisit the settings if your circumstances change, for example if you become a teacher in a course.

Adjusting the Notifications within Canvas (LMS)

You can decide if Canvas notifies about different types of event, and how often you would like to receive notifications. These settings are global for your account. To change the settings for a specific course you will need to go to the course and click on Course Notifications on the right of the page.

TIP: You can change the settings for notifications if your role changes. For example, if you switch from an from an active to a more advisory role, you might wish to set up daily settings for messages, discussions and files.

1. Click on Account.

2. Click on Notifications.

You can change the frequency for different types of notification within Canvas using the check, clock, calendar, and cross icons. The green-marked option on the row shows the current setting. You can click the icons to change the settings.

TIP: If you hover the mouse pointer over the name of the individual settings, Canvas will give you an explanation of what the setting means in practice.

Push-notifications

If you have installed the Canvas app and logged in with it, you get an extra row of options, and you can add extra app-based notifications in addition to the other chosen options.
Remember to allow the app to show notifications in the mobile device's preferences.

Please note, that you must confirm your e-mail in the Canvas system before you can edit your settings. If you do not confirm your email you will NOT receive notifications from Canvas. If you have not confirmed your email then you will see an exclamation mark beside your email. Confirming your email is usually done by clicking on the link in the mail you received when the account was created.
