Use Canvas to monitor student progress and communicate with them on progress

One of the factors that is important to consider when you are implementing flipped or blended learning is how you will communicate with your students around the asynchronous tasks that you give them and how you will keep track of which assignments they have completed. For example, flipped learning will involve the student completing tasks before you meet them synchronously. You will need to know that they have completed these tasks on time and if you see that some students have not started you will want to message the student to ask if they need help. You can also find out a lot about how much interaction students are doing with your course content by looking at the analytics.

Keeping track of students in Canvas

Let us say that you have created self-tests or quizzes that you want students to complete before the synchronous session. How do you know that the students have watched the film or answered your questions? The literature on flipped learning emphasises that students need to be held accountable for their learning and you as a teacher will need to know how to monitor student progress. The Gradebook is the perfect place to start because you can send messages to students directly via a quiz or assignment if you see that they have not completed the task before class.
