When you embed a video from Canvas Studio into a Canvas page, assignment or discussion, you can choose how it is displayed to students. At KI, the new embed options have been available since 22 June 2026: Thumbnail View, Learn View and Collab View.

This guide is for new embeds. The date the video was uploaded does not matter: you can also use these display options when embedding an existing Studio video that was migrated from Kaltura. However, you cannot switch an older, existing embed to one of the new views just by editing it. To use a new view, embed the same Studio video again on the Canvas page.

If you only need to adjust the size of an older embedded video, see M3.2.2 Change the player size or re-embed a video.

Before embedding a video

Always add the video title, duration and the name of the lecturer or presenter as text above the video on the Canvas page. A short description is also helpful. This makes the content clearer for students and helps teachers and support staff find the correct video later.

You can embed a Studio video wherever the Canvas Rich Content Editor is available, including pages, assignments, discussions and announcements. Embedding media can also make it available through the course Studio library.

See the three display options

In this video (8:51 min), Carina Bois demonstrates the new Studio embed options and how to embed a video in Canvas.

You can also see examples of the three views on M3.2.1 Studio embed options – examples.

1. Thumbnail View

The video appears as a compact thumbnail, leaving more space on the Canvas page. When students select the thumbnail, the video opens in a larger view. If a transcript is available and enabled, they can read and search it there. To return to Canvas, select Go Back to Course.

Suitable when: you want to display several videos on one page, for example instead of a Media Gallery playlist, or offer supplementary videos without making the page excessively long.

2. Learn View

The video plays directly on the Canvas page. If the video has a transcript and the scrolling transcript is enabled, students can follow the synchronised text beside the video and search for words or phrases.

Tip: Students can show or hide the scrolling transcript themselves by selecting the transcript icon in the player.

Suitable when: the video is long and students may benefit from searching the scrolling transcript, or when ordinary captions risk covering text or other information on PowerPoint slides in the video.

3. Collab View

The video is displayed with features for adding comments related to the media. These can support discussion, reflection and feedback.

Suitable when: students' comments or discussion around the video are a planned part of the learning activity.

Important: Studio comments are not the same as a Canvas assignment submission or discussion reply. They do not appear as student submissions in SpeedGrader. For assessed work, students must follow the instructions for submitting or replying in Canvas.

Which display option should I choose?

Display option	Recommended use
Thumbnail View	Save space or present several videos on one page
Learn View	Play the video on the page with access to a searchable, scrolling transcript, suitable for videos that are longer than 10 minutes
Collab View	Enable video comments as part of a learning activity

How to embed a Studio video using the new options

Select video to embed

Choose an existing Studio video to embed.

Select the video and choose Thumbnail View, Learn View or Collab View. For a Studio video quiz, a separate quiz option may also be available.

Choose the display option for the new embed.

Review the Video Viewer Restrictions. Depending on the video and the view, options may include downloading the media or transcript, displaying a scrolling transcript and changing playback-speed restrictions. We recommend keeping the transcript available and allowing students to adjust playback speed.

Review viewer restrictions before embedding the video.

Select Embed Media and save the Canvas page or assignment.

Change the display option or settings later

If the video was embedded using the new options, you can generally change between Thumbnail View, Learn View and Collab View without inserting the video again.

Open the Canvas page in Edit mode.
Select the embedded Studio video.
Choose a different display option in the menu, or open Studio Media Options for more settings.
Save your changes.

Note: Resizing the player in Learn View or Collab View may cause the scrolling transcript to disappear from beside the video. Check how the page looks to students after resizing. When the transcript is available, students can toggle its display themselves.

Older embeds work differently: If a video was embedded using the previous Studio method, or was automatically replaced during the Kaltura migration, you cannot simply change it to Thumbnail, Learn or Collab View. To use a new view, embed the same existing video again from Studio. See M3.2.2 Change the player size or re-embed a video.

Accessibility recommendations

Check that the video has captions and, where appropriate, a transcript.
Consider Learn View when students could benefit from reading or searching the transcript beside the video.
Do not restrict playback speed without a specific pedagogical reason.
Check the published page, especially if you have adjusted the player's size.
